カフェ・フランソア in 京都

英会話レッスンで京都の喫茶店・カフェの話題になりました。



名前を挙げてもらったら、

イノダコーヒー、カフェ・フランソア、喫茶ソワレ、六曜社...

有名なお店がたくさんあるんですね!

Cafe Francois is just south of Shijo - Kiyamachi 四条木屋町)on a block full of boutiques and brothels.

Salon de thé François  サロン・ド・テ・フランソア)- the official name - was created in 1934 by Shoichi Tateno立野正一), who had recently graduated from Kyoto Geidai (University of the Arts). Tateno was an avowed socialist 共産主義者)and took part in Japan's early labor movement労働者運動).

The cafe, meant to be a meeting place for workers and artists, was named in homage to the French painter Jean-François Milletジャン・フランソア・ミレー).

In the early days, all profits were said to be funneled to the Communist Party共産党).
In 1936, the cafe began to distribute an anti-fascist 反ファシスト)newspaper, “Doyobi” (Saturday).

A year later, shortly after Japan went to war against China日中戦争), Tateno was arrested for his anti-war activities反戦運動).

After being released from Yamashina Prison(山科刑務所), in Kyoto, Tateno had an Italian friend, Alexsandro Bencivenniアレッサンドロ・ベンチヴェンニ), redesign the interior. And thus it remains to this day.

In 2002, the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs certified the building as a "Registered Tangible Cultural Property(登録有形文化財)."

おもしろいな、と思った表現は4番目のパラグラフに出てくる

all profits were said to be funneled to the Communist Party

のfunnel という動詞。

funnel = じょうご のイメージで、一か所に集まっていく感じが出ています。
