Myōō-in is a Buddhist temple in Fukuyama.
It is standing by the Ashida River.
It is said that the temple was founded by Kobo Daishi in 807.
The five-story pagoda and the main hall are designated as National Treasures.
The pagoda was built in 1348. It is the fifth oldest existing pagoda in Japan.
The main hall was built in 1321. Its architectural design is very unique. It is a Japanese-style building with Chinese-style details. It is the oldest existing building of this style.
Myōō-in also has one Important Cultural Property of Japan.
A statue of Juichimen-Kannon (eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy) was made in the ninth century. It is the main object of worship in this temple. The next chance you can see the statue is 2024.
On the third Saturday of every month, some buildings are open to public and a volunteer group can tell you more about the temple.
