データを利用して周りの現象を理解し、説明する。
それにより組織がより良い判断が下せるよう助ける。
というお仕事のようです。
data analyst や statistician としてキャリアを積んでから data scientist になるパターンも多いそうです。
では学問としてのデータサイエンス（data science、略称: DS）とは？
「データを用いて新たな科学的および社会に有益な知見を引き出そうとするアプローチのことであり、その中でデータを扱う手法である情報科学、統計学、アルゴリズムなどを横断的に扱う。」
